OCCUPATIONAL SUMMARY
Earle F. Zeigler, professor/dean emeritus at The University of Western Ontario since
1989, is in his 65th year of service to the fields of kinesiology, physical education, recreation
and (educational) sport. After working in the Conn. YMCA from 1941-43 as aquatic director
& swimming coach, Dr. Zeigler's first university appointment was at Yale University (1943-
49) where he taught physical education and coached football and wrestling. (Between the
years 1945 and 1948, Zeigler also taught German part-time at the Univ. of Connecticut,
New Haven branch, and then at The Univ. of Western Ontario from 1949-51.) He became
Head, Dept. of Physical, Health, & Recreation Education at the University of Western
Ontario from 1950-56 and also coached three sports (football, swimming, wrestling). He
served in other administrative capacities as well later at The University of Michigan (Chair,
1961-63), the University of Illinois (Head, 1964-68), and finally again as the first Dean,
Faculty of Kinesiology (then Physical Education), The University of Western Ontario (1972-
77). Zeigler was granted professor emeritus status in 1989. Since then, he has devoted his
efforts to teaching, consulting, writing & research, and professional service.

MAJOR PROFESSIONAL OFFICES HELD
Zeigler is a past president of the American Academy of (Kinesiology and) Physical
Education in 1981-82, having been elected as a Fellow in 1966. He is also a past
president (1974-75) of the Philosophic Society for the Study of Sport (now the
International Society for Sport Philosophy). From 1983-85 he was Vice-President,
Communications of the Canadian Association for Health, Physical Education, and Recreation
(and was also a Vice-President for Recreation earlier in 1955-56). In the mid-1980s he
worked with a small group to establish the North American Society for Sport Management,
and was Honorary Past President in 1986-87.

PUBLICATION SUMMARY
In 2004 two trade books were published: A Way Out of Ethical Confusion and
Through the Eyes of a Concerned Liberal. In the preceding year, 2003, a textbook titled
Socio-Cultural Foundations of Physical Education and Educational Sport was published.
Who Knows What’s Right Anymore? was published in 2002, as was Whatever
Happened to “the Good Life”? All together, since 1948 Zeigler has published 39 books
and/or monographs and 405 articles in five subject areas within the field: philosophy,
history, management, comparative & international study, and professional preparation. He
is also the editor of the Stipes Monograph Series on Sport and Physical Activity
Management, and in 1993 completed a five-year term as co-editor of the Journal of
Comparative Physical Education and Sport of the Int. Soc. for Compar. Phys. Educ. &
Sport. He also serves in an editorial & reviewer capacity with a number of other journals and
book publishers in his field.
